The project area includes the Gauja river in the area of approximately 140 km, its valley (from Gulbene and Aluksne District boundaries to Valmiera) and the adjacent areas. The total area of the project – 18070 ha of which only 6 % were originally protected. The objective was to assign a status of an area of protected landscapes and to include it in the network of special areas of conservation of the EU – Natura 2000. The natural values of the project area are mainly threatened by intensification of the use of forest resources and insufficient management of the traditional meadows (mowing and grazing). The scheduled measures under the project were aimed to reduce and prevent these threats.
