Raised Bogs – Restoration of Raised Bog Habitats in the Especially Protected Nature Areas of Latvia

The objective of the project was to renew the natural water levels at the project sites – in the raised bog habitats that have been affected by drainage, thereby protecting mire habitats, plants, and animals of European and Latvian significance. The positive result of the mire management contributed to the recovery of the conditions of the raised mire habitats in the area of 488 ha. Furthermore, the positive results which were reflected both in the hydrologic regime of the mires and the vegetation in the project sites were visible immediately after taking the measures. For the project sites Melnais Lake Mire, Aizkraukles Mire and forests, Aklais Mire and Rožu Mire, nature management plans are developed.
