Seminar and discussion forum “Cooperation and experience exchange about ecosystem services evaluation in Latvia”

The CAP LIFE LAT team was present at the 5th seminar and 2nd discussion forum of the LIFE Ecosystem Services project on October 27th at the EU House in Rīga. The event gathered together nearly 50 representatives of different governmental, municipal, scientific and non-governmental institutions and organisations that actively follow current developments in the ecosystem evaluation services in Latvia.

The LIFE Ecosystem Services project focuses on developing ecosystem services(ESS) evaluation, especially for territorial planning in Latvian coastal areas. In the seminar the project presented thier experiences in using ESS economic evaluation for territorial planning in project test sites; the ESS evaluation allows for a balanced development strategy which serves both needs for economic growth and well-being of the population and nature.

Following the tradition started in early 2017, the event aimed to bring together Latvian researchers and representatives of institutions and organisations working in sectors connected with preservation of ecosystems, i.e. environmental and regional development, agriculture and forestry. The forum allows everyone to meet and discuss the practical use of the ESS evaluation in the implementation of sectorial politics. The second part of the event presented an opportunity to hear various experiences from current projects in Latvia in regard to mapping, assessment and the use of ESS in decision making.
