{"id":240,"date":"2018-09-03T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-09-03T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8080\/?p=240"},"modified":"2025-12-17T10:37:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T08:37:27","slug":"life-birds-in-adazi-project-has-been-completed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeplatforma-staging.needit.lv\/en\/life-birds-in-adazi-project-has-been-completed\/","title":{"rendered":"LIFE &#8220;Birds in Adazi&#8221; project has been completed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\tThe aims of the LIFE+ project &#8220;Birds in \u0100da\u017ei&#8221; were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tto restore nesting and feeding places for rare birds;<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tto improve the status of the NATURA 2000 site and to educate the military personnel and visitors of the area in order to further preserve the natural heritage;<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tto promote cooperation and exchange of good practices between military Natura 2000 site managers and institutions working with similar species and habitats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tTarget species of the project: European Roller, Black Grouse, Woodlark, Red-backed Shrike, Tawny Pipit, European Nightjar and Wood Sandpiper.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDuring the project we restored 1640 ha of nesting and feeding places of rare and endangered birds. We have implemented one of the largest LIFE + program projects in Latvia.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tha of heath;<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t20 ha of pine forest;<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t500 ha of raised bog.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tWe used varied and innovative nature conservation methods in the project.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn the heathland:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\twe set up 60 nestboxes for European Rollers, as well as 200 impregnated wooden perching poles that help the birds search for food;<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tto restore the open landscape, we cut down trees and bushes. This not only makes the landscape more suitable for birds, but also creates more space for military trainings;<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\twe improved heath diversity using mowing and controlled burning;<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\twe used an innovative method &#8211; sod-cutting, which reduces the overgrowing of the site and positively affects the quality of the heath for many years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tIn pine (boreal*) forests:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\twe increased the biodiversity of the forest with controlled burning.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tRaised bog:<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\twe cut down trees and built dams on drainage ditches, thus restoring the water level of the bog.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tIn all of the project territory:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tto prevent violation of regulations of nature conservation (littering with garbage, steeling of wood etc.) we closed illegal roads and set up security cameras and warning signs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tTo read more: <u><a href=\"http:\/\/putniadazos.lv\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/putni_adazos_laymns_2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Project &#8216;Birds in Ada\u017ei&#8221; Layman&#8217;s report<\/a><\/u><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<u><a href=\"http:\/\/putniadazos.lv\">http:\/\/putniadazos.lv<\/a><\/u><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Project &#8220;Birds in Adazi&#8221; aims to restore heath, bog and Western taiga forest in the protected landscape area &#8220;Adazi&#8221;.
